What is Business Coaching?

Business coaching is about making the very best of your business future. It is about "Growing People, Performance and Purpose" (John Whitmore). Every business is about people and how those people perform, and what they are looking to achieve. When management behaviour and intentions are guided by sound coaching principles, the businesses can grow and develop and their people can grow and develop.

Yourcoaching uses robust business coaching models which embody many disciplines and embraces an understanding of emotional intelligence, strategic thinking and best practice to support business owners and leaders to grow successful enterprises and to enjoy that journey.

A short history of coaching

In 1975 Timothy Gallwey wrote the definitive sporting coaching book The Inner Game of Tennis, about the game played inside our minds against our own personal opponents of self-doubt, concentration lapse and anxiety. David Hemery's book, Sporting Excellence, where he studied the common factors separating the performance of high achievers from others, showed that natural talent is not enough: "The mind is considered to have the greatest part to play in improving performances in the future" and he concluded "Most of the achievers believed, to a large extent, that they controlled their own destiny...they were all very balanced individuals and also possessed a positive view on life."

John Whitmore first used coaching in the business environment over 20 years ago. Performance coaching has been used successfully with executives, entrepeneurs, managers and trainers. It has been used a s a tool by managers to enhance performance and productivity, improve skills, for problem solving and employee satisfaction.

In the 1950's Abraham Maslow, an American psychologist and one of the founders of humanistic psychology, started to look at the fulfilment of human potential through self-awareness. Later on Daniel Goleman introduced the idea of emotional intelligence where the individual's social skills evolve from knowing and managing their personal emotions and motivations.

This move towards personal development encompassed other disciplines and life coaching has drawn on this multi disciplinary background developing over the years into a powerful tool for personal change and growth.

Coaching is now well recognised as a developmental tool, the first coaching conference having taken place in 1998. We read about it in magazines, articles appear in the business press and television programmes include coaching experiences. It is now part of our world.
